overview Lefkothea P. Karaviti, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor of Pediatrics, Endocrinology and Diabetes. She has more than 23 years of experience treating pediatric patients at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH)/BCM. She received her M.D. from National University in Athens, Greece, and her Ph.D. from UCLA, where she trained in sexual differentiation of the brain and collaborated with the pediatric endocrinology division. She did her residency and post-graduate training at Cornell Medical College (Cornell University), where her focus was on pediatric endocrinology and diabetes, as well as congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) under renowned expert Maria New. She currently trains fellows in the development of evidence-based and best-practice guidelines for multidisciplinary approaches to disorders of sexual development (DSD) from the neonatal period to adolescence. She is a member of the Pediatric Endocrinology Society, American Pediatric Society, American Diabetes Association, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and the Endocrine Society. Her clinical practice involves patients with type I diabetes, growth disorders, CAH, and DSD. Dr. Karaviti was a pioneer in the establishment of a multidisciplinary approach to treating DSD, adding an ethicist to the team and incorporating education of parents so they could participate in an informed decision-making process, as well as in the development of guidelines for treating DSD.
