Dr. Becnel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine with a secondary appointment in Molecular and Cell Biology. She provides program management and direct supervision of the BIG staff members and ensures that web-based research applications are developed or maintained to meet Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center’s needs. Dr. Becnel is uniquely qualified for her role with expertise in wet bench research, informatics and the software development life cycle. In her role as Director, she manages a team of professionals who provide software solutions for diverse research needs, including epidemiological studies, clinical trials, biobanks, ‘omics data management and high performance computing. Specific duties include program management and oversight of project management, business analysis, software/data architecture, system architecture/maintenance, data management and involvement in all aspects of the software development, adoption and adaptation life cycle. She has a Ph.D. in translational microbiology with graduate cross-training as a W.M. Keck Fellow of the Gulf Coast Consortium under an NIH Roadmap training grant in Pharmacoinformatics. She has been Informatics PI or Technical Lead on a number of national and regional multi-institutional consortium projects including the Nuclear Receptor Signaling Atlas (www.nursa.org), dkCOIN NIDDK cloud-based data sharing project (www.dkcoin.org), Prostate SPORE Biomedical Informatics Network, the Texas Cancer Research Biobank (www.txcrb.org) and NSABP’s PALLET clinical trial that will integrate clinical, pathological and biomarker data. She also serves on the Advisory Panel for prioritization of work on the international CDISC (Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium) BRIDG Model.
